Conventionally, Architecture has been viewed as a cultural product
that not only shapes but is influenced by society and its cultural
norms. Weaving urban patterns, creating cultural landscapes, and
establishing local societies, Architecture as a tool of urbanism has
gained its essence from the values of society and layers of historic
ideologies. Culture, tradition and society interconnect with the
built environment creating arenas for the interplay of civilization
and technology; where people associate with place, relate to
history, and identify with ethnicity. Concomitantly, culture and
society are increasingly influencing both urban
and architectural products.
Yet by
the end of the twentieth century, globalization became
the medium for cultural interaction, thus creating a fissure between
distant
countries, and transforming traditional cities into
mere recipients of the contemporary cultural order. Consequently
concepts of contextually, traditionalism, culture, heritage and
society are being challenged and tested.
Is
architecture the materialization of these diverse
variables? Or is culture the outcome of the
transforming built environment? Hence, where do we stand from this
dilemma? Does our cultural heritage still stand a chance for
revival? And how will the new world order encompass this cultural
heritage? Within this milieu how can we define the relationship
between architecture, urbanism and culture? Hence what is the role
of architects, urban planners and designers?
In this
respect, the conference will address the dialectic between
architecture, urbanism and culture, thus bringing together scholars,
experts and professionals - in the realms of architecture,
planning, building science, urban and environmental design, and
housing - from different parts of the world to discuss their
conceptual perceptions and
present their practical experiences regarding this challenge. This
will be a chance to :
·
formulate a hypothesis where architecture, urbanism
and culture meet,
·
embrace the heritage of the past, and
·
address the circumstances of the present and confront
the challenged of the future
